North Devon has always been a Passion of mine. It’s where as a child my family and I would holiday each and every year, last week in June, first week in July. Invariably my entire family including Nanny, Grandad, Aunties, Uncles, Cousins and family friends could be found ensconced in a large circular wind braked area on Woolacombe beach complete with cool box filled with sandwiches and jam donuts, buckets, spades and dinghy in tow.
My memories of being on the beach as a child are magical, as i sit here
writing this i am transported back to the very days when My Grandad
would bury myself, my brothers and my sister up to our necks
in the sand. When we would wait in line to go on the bouncy castle and i
always dropped my money in the sand and could never find it again. I
think one of things that i loved the best was the waves and being in the
sea with a polystyrene surf board - just so much fun! (and yes i do
still do it now)

On
days when we were not to be found on the beach, we would visit every tourist
attraction this side of the M5. Many family days out included Watermouth
Castle, The Milky Way, The Big Sheep, Dartington Crystal Factory, however, not
every day needed a theme park. Often we could be found crab net in hand in the
rock pools of Combe Martin or walking Capston Rock round to Ilfracombe Harbour
always stopping in Lamb Land on the way. By evening we would always be allowed
a few pennies in the slots, we would go little money bags in hand with 2p’s and
spend hours playing the machines – I loved it.
As
you can see some of my happiest memories are of my holidays in this part of the
country, to be fair it’s my favourite place on earth. Sun or Rain, it doesn’t
matter there is nowhere else would rather be...
